The castle sits on a hill overlooking the whole city. There are two ways of getting to the top of the hill (luckily for me climbing was not one of them) either cable car or chair lift. The chairs on the lift were very small so I opted for the cable car.

The castle was originally constructed in 1603 and completed in 1627. Parts of it had burned down over time and been reconstructed but unlike other castles in Japan, Matsuyamajo has been reconstructed with wood and stone instead of concrete.

I was supposed to stay at a hotel in Matsuyama and then head back to Hiroshima on Thursday. After seeing how far the castle was from the harbour and how much further the hotel was from the castle I opted for returning to Hiroshima after leaving the castle. I caught the next "superjet" ferry back to Hiroshima and stayed in a hotel close to the harbour. This time the room was actually a normal sized room but that may have had something to do with the fact that it was a 5 star hotel.
